Treatments

Centre for Sight Consultant professor Tom Williamson
Vitrectomy Surgery

What it treats: Advanced diabetic retinopathy, vitreous haemorrhage, and retinal detachment.

How it works: This surgery removes blood from the vitreous (gel-like substance in the eye) and may also repair a detached retina or remove scar tissue. It’s typically recommended for severe cases where other treatments are less effective.

Cataract Surgery

What it treats: Diabetic patients often develop cataracts earlier, and surgery can be essential to restore vision.

How it works: The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one. This can significantly improve vision in diabetic patients, though careful management of diabetic retinopathy is necessary before treatment.

Intravitreal Injections

What it treats: Diabetic macular edema (DME) and diabetic retinopathy.

How it works: Anti-VEGF injections (e.g., Avastin, Eylea, Lucentis) are used to reduce swelling in the retina and stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. Steroid injections are also an option for certain patients with diabetic eye disease.

Centre for Sight’s expert ophthalmologists work closely with patients to tailor treatments based on the specific stage and type of diabetic eye disease, aiming to preserve and enhance vision in the long term.
